Digital Signage Trends

 Satellite Stuff

I'm a digital signage guy and don't understand satellites, but Digital Signage Talk has a big post that makes me think maybe I better learn.

Satellite networks that go all over the world sound like an interesting alternative to internet distribtution of digital signage content.

 Digital Signage Day

Globalshop has just announced that it will host a "Digital Signage Day" at the 2007 Globalshop trade show on March 7-9, 2007.

This is some additional legitimacy for digital signage. For those of you who have never attended, Globalshop is a gigunda show for everything retail. If digital signage gets a day, that's recognition that, at a bare minimum, there are a lot of potential exhibitors, and probably that it's getting more and more real for retailers.

 Digital Signage in the Diner

Cool story in QSR Magazine (it stands for Quick Service Restaurant in case you didn't know) about restaurant digital signage

Some very interesting statements from the guy who installed and runs the system:

OVN CEO and President Craig Presser doesn’t mince words about the possibilities of this new advertising strategy. “It’s an exploding market, not even an emerging market,” he says. “Whether you’re in casual or quick-service, you’re going to see place-based media on screens.”

Helius was the company that provided the hardware. Their CTO says this about digital signage:

“I absolutely think this can work in a quick-service market,” Tippets says. “In McDonald’s, Arby’s, Wendy’s, Quiznos, or Subway the same things happen. I walk in and stare at the menuboard, and you’ve got a chance to influence me with upsell opportunities. You can introduce me to a new menu item I might not have seen, and the franchise owner also has a chance to share in revenue,” Tippets says.

So there you go - hit the diners and the restaurants.

UPDATE: Good commentary on the same story at Digital Signage Talk

 Bendable Digital Signs

In the future, digital signs will be very thin and bendable, according to a digital signage story at aka.tv (free registration required).

They're going to do this with carbon nanotubes - I'm sure at a very low cost - not.  I just hope the margins in this business don't get equally thin.

Big, Big, Big, Big Digital Signs

Why stop with a 50 inch plasma when you can use a whole building?

The architects think bigger than us technology folks.  Here's an article about using the entire building as an "active skin," what we would call a digital sign. (HT: Digital Signage Talk)
