 Good Stuff on Digital Signage

How about this for a quote:

Digital signage should allow the advertiser, retailer or restaurant owner to literally speak to and/or interact with their prospects as they make purchase decisions. Optimum digital signage delivers the right message at the right time to the right audience.

I say, go for it. The quote comes from an article on the Optimum Digital Signage Solution

Good Digital Signage Stuff at New York Times

A nice article about digital signage in the New York Times .

This one talks about what's happening with a big mall owner - putting in digital signage in food courts, etc. One thing I didn't see was whether any of the retail tenants were going to have digital signs in their stores.

There are also comments at Digital Signage Talk and Digital Signage Place

Different Paths/Same Destination - Digital Signage

Digital Signage Talk and Digital Signage Place talk about the same study, analyze it differently, but come to the same conclusion.

The basic deal is that, not surprisingly, people use TiVo and other DVR's to skip commercials.  This Jupiter study supposedly says 50% skip commercials.  I've read somewhere else that 70% skip commercials.

Digital Signage Talk jumps on Jupiter for coming up with a "solution" to this problem which says that networks and advertisers should "develop strategies" that work with DVR's.  I don't know exactly what those would be except to stuff TV shows full of product placements.

Digital Signage Place is pretty nice to Jupiter, but points out how advertisers are pretty dumb to keep on spending money where it doesn't work.

The conclusion of each blog is the same.  Digital signage is where it's all happening.

 Sales Impact of Digital Signage

There's an August, 2005, article I hadn't seen before on the effects of digital signage on in-store sales.

Here are some quotes:

According to a Digital Signage Summit held by the Strategy Institute in New York City this spring, in-store broadcasting can boost sales of new products advertised in stores by between 30% and 300%, increase store revenues by 30%, and reduce customers’ perceived waiting time by 15%.

And a little later in the piece:

The typical product advertisement on the BassPro network, according to Gerba, “gets a lift of between 18% and 20%, and, on some,” he says, “sales spike in excess of 200% to 300%.” According to a published report, when CompUSA’s in-store network included advertising, sales of the advertised products averaged 29% above sales in stores that did not show the ad.

I would love to find some other concrete data on the sales uplift that results from digital signage.
